First, a desktop or notebook computer can be used to perform the digitization
in real time. This is hardly a problem from the perspective of resources.
Most desktop computers have much more storage space and processing power
than necessary to digitize voice (and encode in real time). The problem
with this approach, however, is that the microphone must be connected to
the computer. In the case of a meeting, that may be possible. However,
in a lecture, the lecturer may want to pace and not stay next to a
desktop or notebook computer. An expensive solution to this problem is
to use wireless microphones.
