1.3.1 FAT

FAT (file allocation table) is one of the ``original'' file system used by DOS and Windows. There are many variants of FAT file systems, but they are all based on the same basic concepts.

Despite common belief, FAT was not invented by Microsoft. It was invented by Seattle Computer Products, which sold their CP/M (control program/master) operating system to Microsoft, who in return licensed it to IBM.
