1.3.4 Partitions

A partition is a logical entity on a disk. A physical disk (including USB flash drives) can have multiple partitions. For PCs, a hard disk can have up to four primary partitions . Most PCs must boot to a primary partition.

To provide more flexibilities, a primary partition can be marked as an extended partition. An extended partition can be divided into smaller logical partitions.

The file system type of each primary and logical partition is independent of the others. In other words, you can have any combination of FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS partitions among the primary and logical partitions.
