No matter how you use the Internet, watch out for malware!
Malware
means ``malicious software'', and a malware program does
something that is bad.
For more details about malware and how to prevent and repair damage,
please take a CISS (security) class.
In short, you should do the following to prevent malware infection:
- Do not visit web sites that you are not familiar with. Or,
at least try to avoid this!
- Keep your OS up-to-date. This can be done by installing the
latest updates and patches from the vendor of the OS that you
use.
- Install a virus checker, and periodically scan the entire system
for malware.
- Keep the virus database of your virus checker up-to-date.
Most virus checkers let you set up an interval to check and
update the database.
- Install a spyware checker, and periodically scan the entire
system for spyware.
- Keep the spyware database up-to-date.
